So I don't know if anyone on my FL reads Homestuck. It's a webcomic which I currently enjoy quite a bit. It's long, complicated, involves a ton of time paradoxes and is generally pretty awesome. It also uses the web well - by that I mean many pages are animated gifs, there are frequent flash animations that include music, and there are several pages that are basically mini-games where you can walk around and sometimes fight things.

It's about four kids who play a video game together that (spoiler!) ends up destroying the world. Whoops. That happens during the first act - after that, they have to deal with what happened to them.

It does use a lot of ableist language, which sucks - 'retard' and its variations are used quite regularly, though they seem to have tapered off in the more recent acts. I also had some issues with the author's treatment of a character in a wheelchair and using the Disability Superpower trope when it comes to a blind character.

On the other hand, of the main characters, exactly half of them are girls (all the main characters are around 13 years old, so girls, not women), there are two blind characters, one character in a wheelchair, and an entire culture that is essentially pansexual. The 'bad guys' are definitely skewed male, which kind of sucks, as they hold the most power, but it's still really nice to see such as strong female main cast presence in a webcomic.

Anyway! I have two reasons for bringing it up! First are a couple of fanfic recs, 'cause the fanfic for the fandom is pretty damn good. If you don't read the comic, though, it totally and utterly won't make any sense.

And second, the end of Act 5 is coming up soon, and I have a few theories that I wanted to get down so I can go back afterward and laugh at how close/far away I was. :) Spoilers galore~

And there you go, my current geeking out over something post. :P

[Ah, today I feel |sleepysleepy]

So my computer's been broken for weeks. This means I've read a lot of books. Some were rereads, some were brand new. And I don't think this was all of them, but I didn't have my computer to take notes on, sooooo.... Also, starting a new list for 2011.

Gonna try something new with spoilers today... Highlight the large boxes of white in between the *'s, if you so desire. :)

Ten books, all by the same person, and one outlier...Collapse )

And I'm really curious - does anyone else remember reading really dark young adult books as an actual young adult?

I still remember the first time I read a story that a main character died - it was Black Beauty, and I was somewhere between 6 and 8 when I read it (because that's when I was in that bedroom). Ginger died and I started crying, because I didn't realize that characters in books could die. I almost didn't finish the book because of it.

[Overriding the thoughts in my head |Muse - Supermassive Black Hole]

Whew, that's been a while since an update...

So I've been wanting to keep a book list for a while, but I always end up putting it off because... it's not the beginning of the year? Because I read a lot of unpublished stuff? Because I'm afraid people will make fun of me? :P So I said 'screw it' and started right now. It's not even the first of a month, that's how much of a rebel I am. I'm currently only listing actual published books for now, I guess. And I'm listing the books I can remember reading in the last month or so.

Four books below the cut, trying to avoid bad spoilers...Collapse )
